UN Sustainability Development Goals Continued

The United Nations General Assembly’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals or SDGs, are designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.”  St. Johns Swapnplay is proud to be aligned with three of these goals: making quality education accessible,  reducing inequalities, and promoting responsible consumption and production. Ho w are we working to further these goals? So glad you asked! 🙂

At St. Johns Swapnplay, no one is turned away for inability to pay. To help reduce economic inequalities, our membership fees are tiered to fit what a family is able to afford; Our access membership offers a low-cost/no-cost option to qualifying families, and we offer a variety of option for free work-trade memberships, including leading classes and groups, or completing a cleaning shift.

Our swapping room, the Trading Post, helps to reduce financial strain on families by making quality toys, clothing, shoes, educational resources, and health & safety gear easily accessible and free! Our online swapping group helps to connect families not only to resources, but also to other local parents and caregivers, fostering a tight-knit, helpful, caring community.

Additionally, many Portlanders are familiar with making do in a small living space, and many families lack safe outdoor space for children to play. These families rely on our play space to provide a safe place to play and learn every day. Our member families have access to free classes and activities that facilitate healthy development and preparedness for school. Our play space also includes communal areas, like our large kitchen, that help facilitate social connections and meaningful moments for adults and children alike. While the COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily changed how we offer some of these resources and activities, we’re still as active as ever! St. Johns Swapnplay’s mission is to serve our community- and part of this means ensuring no one is left out! We strive to make St. Johns Swapnplay conveniently accessible to all who are interested, and are mindful to actively include everyone in our community in our mission. We are committed to continuously reevaluating and improving our resources and offerings, our accessibility, and ourselves- learning and growing is a lifelong pursuit!
