Rain Garden Reveal!
Thanks to an incredible team of volunteers, our rain garden plan is now a beautiful and functional reality! On April 24th, a hardworking group braved the rain to plant the garden, and after adding the finishing touches, we revealed the garden at our Spring Fling Fundraiser on May 1st!
Our rain garden will not only be a place for children to learn about our local ecosystem by observing the plants, insects, and water at work, and experience authentic, creative learning through imagination-led play, but it will also do the crucial work of keeping rainwater out of our sewers, instead going straight to the plants that need it! By using the rainwater as nature intended, we are saving energy, reducing water use, and helping keep our groundwater clean and refreshed.
Many hands helped to complete this incredible, member-designed, -planned, and -executed project, and we can’t say thank you enough! This project was made possible by East Multnomah County Soil & Conservation District’s Small Projects and Community Events (SPACE) Program grant, which supports conservation projects, education, and community events that promote natural resource conservation.
To our neighbors, (member) volunteers, and Board of Directors, thank you for your time, dedication, and donations. This rain garden is also part of our goal to become Backyard Habitat Certified, and we are well on our way! Thank you to Portland Audubon & Columbia Land Trust for their support in our certification process. Thank you to Mt. Scott Fuel and Salvage Works for offering us a discount on landscape products for this project!
